Driving through the benefits
So you now have a clear and shared vision across the team of where you want to get to, and how to get there. All that is needed now is to implement successfully to realise the benefits.
However, you can guarantee that implementation will not go to plan.
It is rather like flying a plane from London to New York. You know exactly where you want to go, and you have your course perfectly charted. However, the traffic at the airports, the wind and weather, and your payload will all deviate from plan. You will inevitably be off-track most of the time.Your role is track your deviation from the route and to continuously make adjustments to get the plane back on track. Indeed a plane flying from London to New York is "off-course" over 90% of the time - but does indeed reach its desired destination.
The same holds true of any implementation project - although unhappily too many deviate significantly from the original plan and arrive way off destination. What is needed is a journey plan that maps out all the milestones along the way and allows the project team to see how far they are deviating off course so that they can make the appropriate corrections and bring the implementation back on course.
Just like the navigators map for the aircraft - the implementation project needs a detailed chart of the journey which allows the team to understand how far they are deviating from the desired course.
Our "Benefits Realisation map" is the tool which enables this real time steering of the implementation project and makes sure that you can deliver as promised.
