Benefits Realisation
The benefits realisation plan is what is needed to steer a project back on course from its inevitable deviations. It is no good waiting till the end to find you have reached the wrong destination. Correction needs to take place throughout the journey.
The benefits realisation plan spans the IT, People and Process activities to be undertaken and maps out both the intermediate outcomes expected as the project moves from start to conclusion as well as progress on overall benefits delivery.
The example below looks at an example focused reducing customer service costs.

The end goal is shown on the right hand side in green. Each rectangular icon represents a milestone you expect to pass on the journey. Each hexagon represents activities that need to be engaged in to get to the milestone. The colour coding identifies the organisational unit responsible for the activity. In the example above the orange is the IT department, the grey is the customer service team, and the purple is sales and marketing.
Having a map available and measuring progress against it enables the project to be managed in the same way as the plane journey – correcting for deviations as you go – and arriving at the destination on time.
